Biomethane certificates, also called Biomethane guarantees of origin, certify the generation of one unit of energy (MWh) from biomethane injected into the natural gas grid.
These certificates, tradable on the market, verify the renewable origin of biomethane. They promote both the production and use of biomethane, creating added value for producers.
There are two types of biomethane certificates:
- Standard certificates
Issued for each MWh of biomethane injected into the grid.
- Certificates with additional labels
They provide extra guarantees on the sustainability of biomethane (Naturemade Star, REDCert, ISCC).
Regulated by governmental policies, these biomethane certificates are listed in national biogas registries. These registries allow companies to purchase certificates to offset the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their fossil energy consumption.
