New biomethane partnership goes live
The Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP) has been officially established by the European Commission and some major businesses engaged for the energy transition. The project aims to help scale up biomethane production as part of the route to Net Zero emissions.
The Biomethane Industrial Partnership was first announced in the REPowerEU plan in May 2022 and its goal is to boost the yearly production and consumption of biomethane to 35 billion cubic meters by 2030. This way Europe’s reliance on Russian natural gas will be efficiently and cheaply lessened. The initiative also intends to adopt a cyclical approach to decreasing emissions and diversifying farmers’ incomes, in addition to contributing to an integrated Net Zero energy system.
The Biomethane Industrial Partnership is available to all EU member states, as well as corporations, industrial groups, academics, and civil society organizations that want to work together to achieve its goal.
With the symbolic inauguration of a renewable gas pipeline during the EU Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels, Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Commissioner Kadri Simson together with Ole Hvelplund, CEO of Nature Energy, and Harmen Dekker, CEO of the European Biogas Association, officially launched the Biomethane Industrial Partnership.
The BIP’s technical launch will take place on October 25, 2022.
