Swiss energy bill in 2023: bad, but not terrible
Energy bills are not rising in the same way in all European countries: the Swiss case.
Even with 90% of electricity produced by its hydroelectric and nuclear power plants, Switzerland is not protected from the rise in electricity prices in 2023. In some municipalities the impact is felt more than in others. The Federal Commission for Electricity (ElCom) quantified the average increase in electricity prices for 2023 at 27%.
Because of decreased natural gas supply as a result of the ongoing conflict in Europe, electricity prices in Switzerland are rising along with those in rest of Europe. But because hydropower and nuclear power make up the majority of its electricity, the price shock is less severe than in its neighbors‘ nations.
